Internet Faxing

Internet faxing (or "online faxing") is a general term which refers to sending a document facsimile (“fax”) using the Internet, rather than using only phone networks (traditional faxing) with a fax machine.

Depending on the specific method/implementation, advantages of using the Internet can include

  1. no hardware, no software
  2. no extra telephone line required for the fax
  3. paperless communication, integrated with email
  4. send and receive multiple faxes simultaneously
  5. no busy signals
  6. reduction in phone costs
  7. ability to receive and send faxes from any location that has Internet access
  8. privacy as the fax comes directly to your computer
  9. the ability to send the same fax to multiple numbers

There are a multitude of companies offering ‘internet fax’ and most are fairly decent replacements for the ‘traditional fax’.  “eFax” is what Tech Geniuses has used for over 15 years and is the ‘granddaddy’ of internet faxing.  Unfortunately they are becoming very non-price competitive especially when compared to the up and coming new services offered.

Most companies do offer ‘telephone number porting’ which allows you to keep your existing ‘land fax line’ number.  When you order the service be sure to ask the salesperson and have them put into writing / e-mail a guarantee that your number will port.

Internet faxing is easy.  To send a fax you open up your service’s application or web page, log in, enter the destination information, and tell the program which files to fax.  These can be ‘PDF’, Microsoft Word or Excel files, pictures, and many other formats.  If you have a handwritten or signed document you just scan it into a ‘PDF’ format first.  Usually you can ‘mix and match’ file types.  Receiving a fax is even easier.  You get an e-mail with an incoming fax which is usually in a ‘PDF’ format.  You open it.  It can also be forwarded via e-mail.  Simple!

There are about thirty services offering ‘internet faxing’.  Many also integrate with Voice over IP or “VoIP” services.  As each situation is different Tech Geniuses will be happy to consult with you to create the best and most efficient solution for your office or business: and save you money!
